What makes ‘watching what one eats’ a bearable experience?

What makes ‘watching what one eats’ — or otherwise known as dieting — a bearable experience?

Well, that’s been my $64,000 question over the years as I struggled with losing weight then somehow managing to ‘find’ said weight, plus a few extra pounds.

Tonight, after reconnecting with a dear friend while in California, I realized that friendship is that answer! How, you ask? We enjoyed a lovely Italian meal (baked fish, lots of fresh vegies and yes, it was amazing!) with a plate of savory bread and a bowl of aromatic olive oil, taking space on the table and occasionally interrupting the dining experience when getting a waft of the bread and seasoned olive oil.

However, in spite of the visual and aromatic appeal, that ‘benefit’ soon waned when getting lost in ‘catching up’ and reconnecting with a true friend. When those plates became more of an annoyance (the table was indeed small) and my fish was nearly gone, it struck me… talking to my friend was the best reminder that a few tasty carbs are no match to a satisfying conversation.

As I work to ‘remove’ weight (15.8 pounds down, 95 pounds to go…), I am grateful to have true friends on my team. To deal with the long process, I now I frame this journey to health and happiness as working on “The 4 F’s” –> Food, Fitness, Fashion and Fun. But now there’s a new “F” on the block… and that’s Friend.
